The Best Advice For Your Hair

Straight from my hairstylist to you! Before you wash your hair, put conditioner on the ends, then wash the top of your hair only. This protects your ends from drying out and it really works! This is also a great trick during the summer to protect your hair from chlorine - be careful, a little goes a long way! Use a conditioner that has a sun filter or spf in it, such as Biogenol Reconditioner or Redken’s UV Rescue Daily Sun Milk leave-in protective moisturizer.

Beautiful Curls

Do you have trouble taming your curly tresses or maybe you’d just like to refine the process so that it’s easier to maintain and create the hair you love. You might even have straight hair and you want to know more about the best way to have a curly look for an evening out.

The first thing to know about your curly hair is that it loses moisture faster than any other hair type. For this reason it is very important to use a good leave-in conditioner or moisturizer in addition to your regular conditioner every time you wash your hair. Also, wash your hair every other day so that the oils in your hair don’t get stripped.

Tigi Catwalk has a great line called Curls Rock which includes a leave in moisturizer for curly hair. This line smells wonderful and works wonders for maintaining curly or wavy hair. Shampoo, Conditioner, Curl Amplifier, Curl Booster, Leave In Moisturizer - this line even has a hairspray for curly hair and the leave in moisturizer can be used as a second day rehydrator.

If you have naturally curly hair and do not use hot rollers or a curling iron - apply the leave in moisturizer then scrunch the Curl Amplifier throughout your hair while it’s still wet and air dry or use a diffuser. After your hair is dry spray on the Curl Booster, this is one of the best products I’ve found for curly hair, it makes your hair really soft and defines each curl beautifully (you can also use it the second day to refresh and redefine your curls).

If your hair is more straight and you want to add curl - apply the leave in conditioner then apply the Curl Amplifier to each section of hair that you want to curl. You can do this using hot rollers, a curling iron, or velcro rollers under a hairdryer - just brush out a section of hair, run the Curl Amplifier through the section and wrap the hair around the roller or iron rod. When you take the roller or iron rod out pull it out following the shape of curl you want to create. To create loose waves pull the hot roller back and away from your head then brush it out until you have the amount of wave you want. To create ringlets or loose curls pull the roller or iron out in the shape of the ringlet, then either finger brush it for loose curls or leave it for sophisticated ringlets. Once you hair is dry, spray the Curl Booster on to define each curl, add shine, and get rid of any flyaways.

Finish your look with a little Curls Rock Hairspray and make sure you touch it up the next day with Curl Booster, to reshape curls and Leave In Moisturizer to keep your hair healthy and soft.

Keeping Red Hair Red

If you have chemically treated red hair then you know it can be difficult to keep it from fading, and if you have gone from blond to red you know it can seem near impossible to keep the red in you hair. After years of experience going from blond to red, red to blond, and several other metamorphoses I have come to know the secrets of the red locks.

The first thing to know is that red is the largest hair color molecule and therefore it is difficult to get it to stick. However, once you have gotten it to hold it is also the most difficult to get rid of. Because of this, if you are going from blond to red (particularly treated blond) the first thing you want to focus on is keeping the red tone in your hair, you can focus on the specific shade you want later. If you are not blond, getting the shade you want now will most likely be an easier feat.

If you are coloring your own hair you can lock the color in by putting a shower cap over your hair (while the color is on your hair) and applying heat with a blow dryer. Whether you are coloring your own hair or having a professional color it, make sure you wait 24 - 48 hours before washing it. This allows the color to lock and settle into your hair.

In order to keep your hair red make sure you use a color safe shampoo, a great one is Redken’s Color Extend Shampoo. In addition, if you really want to see you color last, wash your hair in cold water - this is the ultimate way to keep your color lasting the longest and the shade brighter longer. Nothing will fade your red hair faster than hot water, so cold, cold, cold! It’s worth it for the results you will see.

The next trick to have in your bag is a color glaze that adds both color and shine to your hair between colorings. The best one for this is John Frieda’s Luminous Color Glaze. It comes in shades for both bright red hair and dark red hair, only takes three minutes, you can do it in the shower, and it leaves your hair really soft.

The last, but one of the most important things is to use a daily color sealer. John Frieda’s Color Envy Daily Color Sealer yields amazing results. It locks your color in daily, protects it from the elements, and adds shine. This product really works to prevent fading on a daily basis.

If after taking these steps you still find your color to be fading, check the styling products you are using. Some styling products will fade you color very quickly. Choose a line that does not fade color or is formulated for chemically treated hair. Aveda’s products are made with color treated hair in mind and will be much gentler on your red locks.

Most of all be patient and follow these steps to build the red shade that you really want. If you are in the sun a lot use a sun screen on your hair to prevent fading. The more you use these tips the more results you will see and the more you will see of the red you really love.
