The Nails of Summer

white-nails-2.jpgAccording to Sephora’s Jessica Anderson white nails are the trend of the moment for summer. Although my favorite for more natural tones is an American manicure (like French, but with more pink fleshy tones), I like the concept of white nails. This looks very chic with this summer’s metallic trends, picture white nails with a bronze purse or white toes peeping out of gold sandals with your best summer glow. I’m loving it already!

What Sephora has to say:

“Looks like opposites attract after all: Fall’s gothic, rebellious black nails have attracted a contrasting white manicure for summer; an angelic look with a hint of trend-setting diva. This unexpected nail trend is perfect for summer too—a season of soft pastels, flirty sundresses, and ultra-highlighted locks. After all, what goes better with that sun-kissed summer glow than light, girly nails? Try layering white shades to create different matte or shimmering textures. Let the white hot summer begin!”

Happy Memorial Day! In honor of the first holiday of summer I offer you my red, white, and blue beauty finds to start the season off right! To southern girls everywhere you can now wear white. To those of you who didn’t know it’s against the rules to wear white before memorial day, use this as an excuse to celebrate this summer tradition with us. Have fun today and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Red is for red lips, one of the hottest trends going right now. You’ve seen it at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and all last week Cannes, get this gorgeous look yourself and start the summer off right! Chanel’s Rouge Allure is the perfect way to create your perfect red lip. Their lipsticks are so creamy and treat your lips so well that they will remain a favorite of mine for all time.

White is for white ballet flats! Ballet flats are the hottest thing going right now, and if you don’t already own a pair then take advantage of the Memorial Day sales and go buy a pair today! I’m normally not a J Crew kind of girl, however they do have a great selection of ballet flats right now.

Blue is for cobalt blue, one of the hottest colors for Spring and going strong into summer. Solid or in the season’s graphic prints, it doesn’t matter as long as your closet has this color peeping out somewhere. Want to add just a splash? Grab a graphic print cobalt blue scarf, tie it around your head, slip on your sunglasses and drive away Audrey Hepburn style! This look works really well with the seasons white bangle earrings or bracelets.

Get A Summer Glow

summer-glow.jpgIs the tan passee? The question raised in the May issue of Vogue is reflective of the trend brought on by all the new gradual self tanners. Pasee or not, what’s in is a glow. Forget your dark tanners and focus on something that’s more you, you with a glow that is. Take your natural color and just turn it up a notch. You know you look good like this! This trend is so complementary to almost any time of life. If you are starting to show a few lines or wrinkles this look will help reflect light, whereas a darker tan will actually accentuate wrinkles by causing shadows. If you are not yet to that time of life when those pesky lines appear then this look will just give you a healthy glow, like the goddess you are.

To create the new look you can either mix a little bronzed illuminator with your face moisturizer or body lotion, or use your best gradual self tanner. Don’t forget to exfoliate first! The summer glow looks gorgeous with summer’s bright makeup palettes. Try a peacock green eye or a little navy blue mascara.

The Best Sun Screens

Filed Under Blog, Seasonal, Skin Care | 1 Comment

As summer sneaks up on us you’re no doubt getting your beach and sun gear together. As you gather all the necessities make sure that you replace any sunblock that is over six months old. When sunblock sits for more than six months it starts to lose it’s potency, accounting for hundreds of sunburns with seemingly no known cause. I had sunblock on, I don’t understand why I got burnt! You most likely had on sunblock from last summer, or worse the summer before that. Also, if you are fair skinned make sure you refresh your sunscreen every two hours, but even if you are darker this is a good idea for protection against wrinkles. Fair skins are more at risk for skin cancer, but darker skins are just as at risk for wrinkles!

If you are in need of replacing your screens these are some of my favorites. My cabinet is never without them! I am fair skinned so I have had years of experience with what works and what doesn’t. All of these also have the added benefit of leaving your skin better and softer than before you put them on. And whatever you do don’t forget to add you chicest pair of UVA, UVB block sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around your eyes from sun and squinting lines!

alba-18-c.jpg

Alba Botanica Chemical Free Sunscreen For Sensitive Skin SPF 18 This is one of my favorite sunscreens, completely chemical free! Perfect for everyday use, this sunscreen works really well under makeup and makes your skin really soft.

Alba Botanica Organic Lavender Sunscreen SPF 30
This sunscreen makes your skin so soft and it smells wonderful, very relaxing. This formula is water resistant so its great for those days when you’re not playing hard in the water, but you want a little something extra. Also works great under makeup.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Cooling Mist Sunblock SPF 45 One of my all time favorites, hands down! This stuff is amazing! It’s waterproof, sweatproof, and it feels so good and cooling on your skin. This sunscreen works better than any sunscreen I have ever used and extremely well in intense sun. Last year I was in southern Baja on a sail boat for ten days. Like I said I am fair skinned and the sun is much more intense closer to the equator. I used this sunscreen the whole time, reapplying every two hours, stayed cool, got no burn and actually got a better tan than I have ever had before!

age-shield-3.jpg

Neutrogena Age Shield Sunblock SPF 45 Like the Neutrogena sunblock above this works amazingly well and is sweatproof and waterproof. I use this sunscreen on my face, particularly when I am in intense sun or am going to be in the sun all day. Both of these sunscreens have Neutrogena’s patented Helioplex™ technology that provides an unbeatable level of Broad-Spectrum UV defense (this technology was previously only available in Europe and works better than anything I’ve seen).
