The public needs to be more aware of this awful problem. I got staph after back surgery..it was the most painful thing I've ever been thru! After the hospital stay they put a picc line in for 2 1/2 more mos. of antibiotics that had to be injected 3 times a day! They say the staph is laying dormant in my system. Like you, I thought it was just a spider bite, but once it got about an inch in diameter and made it very painful to walk, I did some more online searching and realized it looked a lot like staph. I went to the local clinic, where they promptly drained the big sore and a second one that had appeared nearby. The doctor then stuffed both with gauze ribbon, which I had to leave sticking out of the cuts for 4 days while they drained. I also started taking doxycycline antibiotic. Luckily, the tissue sample sent to the lab came back as not MRSA. It's been a few weeks now and the original ones have healed up, but I have one more that's started and is giving me trouble. I have a topical antibiotic cream called mupirocin that seems to help, and the doctors told me to put a hot pad on the sore several times a day to help the puss inside to come to a head and get it out of my leg.
